Integrating language, literacy, and the arts*
*Offered by Habla Teacher Institute in partnership with Avenues
How can arts-based approaches drive deep and rich engagement with academic content? How can multilingualism practices grant access and challenge to all learners? Habla has been running the highly transformative Teacher Institute for many years in Merida, Mexico, and they will bring their work to NSTI this year. Participants will learn by doing–performing, creating art, discussing, imagining, sharing, laughing–in order to dig deep into the intersection of arts, culture, language, and identity.
Growth-Oriented Feedback: Beyond Grades
*Offered by The DKDK Project in partnership with Avenues
This workshop invites participants to consider the role feedback plays in creating learning environments and experiences that facilitate growth and deeper learning. We explore ways we can create “feedforward” loops that support learner-centered growth. We will further examine the role traditional grading systems play in our students' experience of school and grapple with how we can work within and disrupt that paradigm. Incorporating these practices builds student agency, grows meta-cognition and shifts the way a teacher designs learning.
One Foot in the Future
Offered by Big Questions Institute in partnership with Avenues
Educators can no longer "wait and see" what happens next. Instead, we must now sense and feel the future we want beforehand and create it with imagination and hope. Building on the ideas in the “One Foot in the Future” ebook, join Big Questions Institute Co-Founder Will Richardson on a two-day journey that will provoke, inspire, and nurture real optimism for what comes next.
In this unique workshop, we'll explore emerging tools, mindsets, and practices that will build our imagination muscles and develop our collective ability to create a better future for schools. It's a playful, collaborative, practical, and urgent experience that will motivate you to take action in your personal as well as professional life. With our students, we can build a better future of learning in schools together. The time to start is now.
Aprendizagens visíveis, avaliação formativa e aprendizagem criativa em sala de aula
Offered by Ativa Educação in partnership with Avenues
Shared Authority in the Math Classroom
How might teachers share authority with students in order to cultivate a growth mindset and self-direction? What strategies support students in engaging in the sort of “productive struggle” that leads to learning and growth? Join Avenues math teacher leaders as they explore these questions, visit classrooms, and build with participants a shared sense of what’s possible in math education for students and teachers.
Belonging Through Community and Restorative Practices
What restorative practices can teachers and schools deploy to cultivate a sense of belonging and foster a positive school culture? How can restorative conversations support students in learning how their actions impact their communities? Join Avenues faculty and inquire together into these questions by visiting community circles, learning about restorative practices, and discussing the practices that help all community members feel a sense of belonging.
Empowering Innovation and Innovators: A Leader Playbook
This hands-on workshop will share key characteristics, strategies, and practices that school leaders can implement to drive innovation and positive change in their organizations. We will delve into key topics such as developing and sustaining a culture of innovation, promoting collaboration and creativity, and fostering student-centered approaches in the classroom. Over two days we will engage in interactive discussions, explore case studies, and share real-world examples where we will collectively gain and share insights and practical tools that can help each of us lead our schools in innovative ways and prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world.

Place Based Learning
What is Place Based Learning? Have you experienced the power of place? Have you ever witnessed children immersed deeply in experiencing the world around them, in a state of presence that what’s happening there is real and meaningful? Learning in these moments is organic and profound. There’s much to learn from the places we inhabit — from our own communities to traveling across the globe. Yet, schools have gradually replaced these powerful experiences with desks in classrooms. Place based Learning is not only exploring the outdoors. Join us to further explore how Place Based Learning can promote a compelling context for learning through agency, authenticity and community awareness.
